On July 10th 2025, members of the ImpleMendéz team delivered a specialised workshop in Liverpool for professionals working with victims of Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. The session focused on best practices when interviewing and communicating with victims of trafficking.
Organised in collaboration with the Modern Slavery and Immigration Crime Unit and our COST Action, the workshop was hosted at the Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing at Liverpool John Moores University.
The day featured a series of expert-led presentations and dynamic discussions:
- Laura Pajón discussed how to build rapport and apply best practices when engaging with victims of trafficking.
- Zoe Given-Wilson provided key insights into complex PTSD and its implications for victim interviews.
- Kate Davis addressed the role of cultural differences in effective communication.
- Maria Gomez Bedoya examined cognitive, emotional linguistic, and cultural language barriers that can hinder understanding in interviews.
- Amina Memon presented the background behind the development of the Mendéz Principles.
The workshop sparked meaningful dialogue, grounded in both research and real-world application, and underscored our commitment to improving ethical interviewing practices.
