We are excited to announce the start of a week full of events in Lisbon (Portugal). An intensive Training School brings together 41 participants from 9 countries, divided into two groups, for a week of dynamic learning, exchange, and capacity-building. On May 15-16 2025 Guidelines for Effective and Fair Interviewing in Criminal Proceedings Conference was taken place in Freiburg (Germany) with 18 speakers and panelists (including Juan Méndez, Ivar Fahsing and Rebecca Milne), and around 50 high-ranking legal professionals from all over Germany (judges, legal practitioners, researchers and policymakers).

Abertay University in Dundee (Scotland) is offering a fully funded PhD studentship titled “Trauma and Technology: Identifying Best Practice for Video-Recorded Interviews (VRIs) with Victims of Sexual Crimes” (start date October 2025, application deadline 28 May 2025; read more from here).

Co-Chairs of the Steering Committee of Experts for the “Principles on Effective Interviewing for Investigations and Information Gathering” presented a statement in order to take stock of the Principles, four years after their launch and to encourage others to do likewise. On May 7-8 2025 several our Action members were involved with events in Bucharest (Romania). On May 7th Valentina Cadelo was working with key criminal justice professionals in helping complete the translation of the Mendez Principles into the Romanian language. One group of members from 9 different countries discussed on 6th the possibilities to create a Nordic-Baltic Mendez Centre for Investigative Interviewing while the others discussed on 6th and 7th the barriers and enablers to implementation regarding their project in the Action.

The Irish Méndez Centre for Investigative Interviewing hosted two events in April. On April 16th, the Centre hosted a one-day training event for members of An Garda Síochána (the Irish police) centred on rapport-based interviewing and the ORBIT framework. On April 28th, the Centre held an expert knowledge exchange event at the Trinity College Institute for Neuroscience.
